A program for children and teens aged 8-18. Fitness is friendly, fun and empowering! GTHP's kid-positive program is designed for children and adolescents living with excess weight and obesity. It helps young people develop confidence and healthy habits through exercise, nutritional food plans, and a focus on health education.
One parent/guardian may participate at no extra charge to help the child achieve his or her fitness goals.
The Facts
• North Carolina ranks 11th in the US in obesity in children and adolescents.
• More than 125 million children are at unhealthy weight levels.
• Environmental factors are paramount—home, childcare, school, and community
environments can influence a child’s behavior related to food intake and physical
activity.
Childhood obesity is at an all-time high. The most recent figures from a CDC study report that the number of children ages 6-11 who are overweight or obese has tripled since 1980. A proportional increase in Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Asthma, Sleep Apnea among children has been documented. Depression, social isolation, low self esteem and impaired learning have all been linked to weight problems, poor nutrition and inactivity.

GTHP has developed a program to reacquaint children with their natural attraction to activities that involve their bodies, minds, and spirits in healthy ways. We are finding that kids are drawn to a lifestyle that balances physical activity and healthier food choices. Through well-planned education we invite our young clients to be involved in their own health and wellness. Self-esteem skyrockets long before the weight goals are met! Knowledge is power.
Our eight-week program addresses these important concerns, and children change their lives because they learn how, and they feel better.
What’s included
Eight 45-minute sessions combining exercise and education
• Learning the importance of physical activity and reducing sedentary time
• Understanding food labels
• Learning to identify healthy food choices that taste good
• Practicing how to move and exercise safely
• Putting the lessons into practice—fun projects that put principles into action and
empower kids to build a balanced life from the health basics they’ve acquired.
